About the Monarch Film FestivalThe Monarch Film Festival is produced and hosted by the Exeter Union High School Graphic Arts, Media and Entertainment pathway students. It is meant to strongly encourage project-based learning and meaningful student work in media and multimedia in order to acknowledge and reward successful classroom work. The Festival believes that (1) students are capable of extremely high level work, beginning at very early grades (2) media and multimedia are excellent tools for students (3) video and multimedia should be integrated into the regular subject-area curriculum (4)rewarding exemplary work and good school programs encourages more of both.

How can my students participate?
All you have to do is allow your students the opportunity to complete a video project to demonstrate learning in your existing curriculum (book report, history project, music assignment, etc). The topic can be whatever you and/or your students choose. No fancy software is needed. All they really need is a video camera of some sort. An iPad with the iMovie app. is an amazing tool. If you don't have access to this, check with your tech department, library or fellow teacher that may have access to an iPad. Students can even bring their own device from home if you'd like. If you don't know how to use it, don't worry, your students probably already do! We have seen 4-year-olds make some great movies using an iPad equipped with iMovie. If they don't, that's great too! Let them explore. That is one of the main points of this project.

Teacher ProjectsBecause it was recognized early that teachers are also capable of creative, inspiring work, there is a Teacher-Created category for both elementary and secondary levels.

Teacher Involvement Remembering that the festival is a celebration of work done in the classroom, the question is reframed as ‘how much teacher participation should there be in student learning?’. The answer is: Just enough. Teachers decide how much students need to be guided to learning. Technology tools are no different. It is a teacher’s decision.
